The majority of the world’s population live in urban areas. The speed and scale of urbanization is far greater than ever in the past, overstretching governments’ capacities. This will pose overwhelming new challenges for cities in poorer countries: they will need to build new urban infrastructure (houses, power, water, sanitation, roads, commercial and productive facilities) more rapidly than cities anywhere before. Oxfam needs to get ready for the 'century of the city'.
This urban framework signals a step change in Oxfam GB’s investment, profile, and learning in urban programming so that by 2016, Oxfam GB will have doubled its impact on urban areas across its Development, Humanitarian, and Campaigns work.
