If women led a sustained, multi-pronged challenge to male domination, social change could become a reality. Such change must be practical and embrace economic and health systems, popular education and the media, and female role models. The author recounts opposition she faced - by women as well as men - when she questioned gender norms. She distinguishes between genuine cultural beliefs, practices that subordinate women in the name of culture, and practices that actually promote women but are ignored. Chitsike looks also at the meaning of multiculturalism and potential dangers of using this concept. This article is hosted by our co-publisher Taylor & Francis.
