The theme running through this special issue is `development management in practice'. As the focus is on the practice of development management, we include contributions which in some way illustrate success, failure, good practice, new insights, and research needed better to understand the management of development. The terms management and development (and their combination) are used in a broad sense. That is, we do not limit development to `developing countries' and we do not limit management to operational matters.<p>This article is hosted by our co-publisher Taylor & Francis.</p>
