This issue of Development in Practice contains twelve papers from the symposium, held in Johannesburg, South Africa 20-23 June 1996. The symposium, co-hosted by the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) and the South Africa Office of Oxfam, drew together individuals and organisations working in the areas of violence, conflict and peace-building. In this preface to the series of papers, the authors briefly highlight the major topics discussed and conclusions reached.
