Income generation schemes in urban areas of the Third World are many and varied. However, too often such schemes fail to achieve sustainable economic viability and depend on continued funding by development agencies. This book examines the reasons for failures or successes and stresses that those wishing to help the urban poor improve their incomes, should be more aware of the harsh economic realities. The importance of poor people themselves setting objectives and priorities is emphasised. Sometimes their existing income generating activities could benefit from the provision of advice, training, or credit. Special attention is given to the problems faced by poor urban women.en_US
