<p>Poverty is no accident. It’s not a natural phenomenon like gravity. It has not always been with us, and given global wealth, it should not be with us today. Yet, it persists for hundreds of millions of people around the world, in high- and low-income countries alike. Why? Simply put, people in poverty have the cards stacked against them in myriad ways: they live in a war-torn nation; they are a woman or girl that faces discrimination; they are a refugee in a strange land; they are a racial or ethnic minority that cannot access opportunities; or they scratch out a living in fragile climate-affected land.</p>
