Description
Violence against women is a complex, worldwide, issue of human rights. It has so far been scarcely documented, and this article provides a crucial overview of the key issues. Gender-based violence is one manifestation of unequal power relations between men and women, in the realms of politics, economics, society, and culture. The authors show how change regarding this balance of power is the prerequisite for sustainable development, and for any long-term success in ending the violence. Development approaches to date have had to work within the unequal power framework, exacerbating violence in some cases. The article ends with specific recommendations for bilateral development co-operation policy.
