Description
Since the 2004 tsunami and 2005 earthquake, international agencies have made significant progress rebuilding the island of Nias. However, there is concern that they have paid little attention to ensuring gender equitable access to humanitarian and development programming. Oxfam's livelihood programme was established on Nias in 2005, and was due to finish at the end of 2007. The first phase established community based livelihood groups, and this was then expanded to support cocoa and rubber producers in rural and coastal areas. This report was commissioned in March-April 2007 to assess gender issues as they relate to livelihoods on Nias, with the aim of recommending ways that Oxfam can further support women in targeted rural and urban communities.
