Description
In 2004 over 1.1 million people remained displaced by ongoing conflict in Democratic Republic of Congo and millions of others continued to live in areas affected by violence and disease. In May 2004 a four-year Programme, was created, aiming to 'save lives and protect the health of people affected by conflict and natural disasters throughout the Congo by focusing on preparedness, response, and protection issues'. The humanitarian programme has focused on immediate and medium-term needs for public health (water, hygiene promotion and sanitation) and non-food items, currently carried out by field teams based in Beni (North Kivu), Bunia (Ituri) and Uvira (South Kivu) and targeting over 500,000 people. This final evaluation assesses progress over the four-year period, highlighting factors that proved critical in enabling or hampering progress and makes recommendations for future work.
