Description

Located in the north of the Cambodia, Preah Vihear (PVH) is one of the poorest provinces in the country. Rice farmers in the area have the potential to produce organic rice for a good price, but smallholders—particularly women—are often unable to take advantage of these opportunities, as agricultural cooperatives in the district do not function well and the local authorities lack the capacity and budget to help.

This case study explains how Oxfam in Cambodia and its partners have worked to improve the situation for rice farmers in PVH. As part of the Gender Transformative and Responsible Agribusiness Investments in South East Asia (GRAISEA) programme, they developed the capacity of four local agricultural cooperatives and trained 153 rice farmers (100 of whom were women) in organic and certified rice production so they could increase their incomes.
