Disaster Risk Reduction Makes Development Sustainable

Kellet, Jan
Description

Governments and institutions must place risk reduction at the centre of the post-2015 development agenda, to ensure that disasters do not derail development.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) must contain:

A disaster reduction target;

Disaster risk reduction integrated across other targets;

Commitment of countries to measure risk and account for disaster losses; and

A specific focus on marginalised groups.

First presented at the UN Open Working Group on SDGs, this paper shows how disasters devastate families, communities and nations, and undermine every aspect of sustainable development, whether social, economic or environmental. As the impact of disasters grows, development must be risk-proofed to prevent massive loss of life, livelihoods and growth in the future.
