Description
Laguna Lake in the Philippines is in a state of decay, due to Government and foreign intervention. Women in Sinalhan community are suffering reduced incomes and status, as they can no longer sell and process fish, or invest in fishing equipment. These women are forced into alternative work such as laundering, which is physically demanding and poorly paid. It is women who fetch water from pumps: a labour-intensive, time-consuming task with risk of contamination from the water. This article looks at the role the NGO 'United Women Power' is playing in giving women a chance to address their families' poverty.
